At Madwa’s Manzini Centre, the surrounding soil and climate can make the challenges of living off the land even tougher, but a simple barrier has transformed the area’s conditions. With Madwa’s support, the women now grow vegetables on every available spot of land surrounding the weaving centre – and as the area is fenced, their productivity isn’t interrupted by the local goats who’ve been known to be all-too-friendly neighbours! These women successfully cultivate beds of cassava, sweet potato, beans, spinach and carrots. As many of the weavers here are grandmothers who are sole providers and guardians of their grandchildren, orphaned by HIV, this fence has enabled a stable supply of nutritious food for them and their families.
